Wong Halves counting method

The Wong Halves system is a well-known balanced card-counting method created by Stanford Wong. It aims to improve accuracy by assigning fractional values to cards, allowing a counter to track the changing player advantage more precisely than simpler systems.

At its core, the strategy works by giving low cards positive values and high cards negative values. As cards are dealt, the running count reflects how “rich” the remaining shoe is in high-value cards. Because the system uses halves and wholes, it reacts more sensitively to card distributions than a standard Hi-Lo count.

Players studying the Wong Halves method focus on three ideas:

Consistent tracking. Each card has a predefined weight. Maintaining an accurate running count requires smooth mental arithmetic with those fractional values.

True count conversion. Since the system is balanced, the running count must be divided by remaining decks to understand the real advantage.

Decision adjustments. The true count influences betting and playing decisions, but this requires substantial practice and is not trivial to execute in a live setting.

The Wong Halves count is considered one of the most precise mainstream systems, but it demands far more practice than simpler counts. Its value is primarily educational: it shows how deeper weighting of card importance can theoretically improve accuracy, though its complexity makes it impractical for most real-world play.
